Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the most treatable conditions of vision loss with early detection. To demonstrate the importance of having your eyes examined regularly, it has been shown that Glaucoma’s are first detected in many cases by an Optometrist.

The symptoms of Glaucoma are generally not recognized by the patient unless it has progressed to a stage where it has a direct effect on one’s lifestyle. This is at the point where vision loss cannot be reversed.

An Optometrist will perform a series of tests in order to detect early diagnosis of Glaucoma. These test include Tonometry (Eye Pressure), Visual Field Assessment and Dilated Fundus Examination (assessment of the Retina).

If Glaucoma is suspected then a referral to an Ophthalmologist (Eye Specialist) is necessary which is a service provided by the Optometrist.
